Every odd year in the Fraser River we are treated with Massive returns of Pink Salmon. With 2013 being predicted as one of the biggest in years!September and October are prime months to head out and test your skills trying to catch one of these aggressive acrobatic bullets.light tackle is the way to go for pinks.Spin casting, jigging and fly fishing are the preferred methods and ironically enough, "PINK" is the magic color!Pink salmon love to chase lures/jigs/fly's that are Bright pink.Other popular choices are bright orange, yellow, chartreuse and green can all be very effective colors to.An 8 foot spinning rod with a sensitive tip is good for these sometimes soft biters. Generally 6-8lb test mono spooled onto a medium size spinning real will surely get the job done. You can tie on a 1/4oz spoon of your choice cast it out and slowly retrieve! This is a very simple and effective method to catching these amazing fish! Before you head out it's always a good idea to have a cooler full of ice,Pink salmon have very soft flesh, once the meat is exposed to any sort of warmth it starts to deteriorate... fast! There's nothing worse than bringing your fresh catch home only to find out it has turned into salmon pate! Pink salmon are excellent fish to eat especially if they are throw onto the barbeque the same day they were caught. There sensitive flesh doesn't keep well in the deep freeze so be sure to eat it withing the first month or two.Pink salmon are great for smoking to! Looking to Get a head start on this years hunting season..Spending a day out in the back forty's hunting for shed antler's can put you that much closer to the elusive monster you'll be looking for!
Finding Sheds 101
Spending a day out shed hunting is not only a great way to get some fresh air,but you can also learn a lot about the animals in your hunting area.Size of the animal, age, health, genetics! If you find a shed, there is a good chance that buck will be somewhere uphill of were you found it come hunting season.Though some bucks will hang out in the area they shed all year long, while some will travel several miles down. Sheds won't necessarily consistently put you onto the deer, they can however lead you into the right direction. After you have found a couple good drainage's the deer have wintered in(depending on the area,coast/southern Interior ect),get a map and mark the area's.Take a look at the map and see how the drainage's connect with ridges and other drainage's all the way up to the highest peaks. While your at it try and figure out what roads will get you within close enough range to those areas.look for water holes on the maps(Google earth is good). Come mid summer you will want to get back out to were you found the sheds, looking for tracks.Look for the big bucks above the timber line or low in the brush county!
